Built Environment Accessibility

Our experience with built environment accessibility goes hand-in-hand with our experience in environmental design projects, including accessible interior and exterior wayfinding and exhibit design, digital/dynamic signage system design, display typography, conference centre planning for fully accessible events, and leading the development of accessibility plans for federal government organizations that include their 3-year or 5-year plan for built-environment accessibility for their facilities.

We have performed (or peer-reviewed) accessibility audits and multiyear strategies to regulatory standards (for private sector (e.g., Honda), national government (e.g., FedDevOntario), and NGOs (e.g., the Canadian Museum of Nature) that include accessible built environment analysis. Accessibility has also been part of our broader mandate for clients, facilities, and installations with clients such as VIA Rail (our national rail service), every Class 1 airport in Canada, Canadian Museum of Human Rights, CATSA (Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority), Carleton University (arguably North America’s most accessible university), municipal transit stations, Daniel Libeskind (the architect), National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa International Airport, Pier 21, Toronto International Airport, Transport Canada, Canadian Transportation Agency, and the Vancouver International Airport.

We have also been directly involved in the organization of accessibility and design conferences on 5 continents in conference facilities, and are intimate with facilities planning for accessibility, including where built environment accessibility must interact successfully with a variety of fixed and event-specific communications media. Our collaborative partners include Calori+Eyden (New York) and Spiekermann Associates (Berlin). Our team includes members of the Province of Ontario’s AODA Accessibility Standards Advisory Committee and Standards Development Committee, including for the built environment, and working with directors of NGOs representing people living with a variety of mobility, visual, and auditory challenges. David has extensive lived experience as a caregiver and occupational consultant regarding physical accessibility and sensitivity for both residential and travel environments.
