How To Update To A Newer (or different) TimeTo Version

We regularly issue new versions of TimeTo™.

Choose from these approaches to make sure you'll know when new versions are available:

Installing an update is easy and safe: simply run the same installer that new TimeTo™ users use to install Timeto for the first time. The installer will automatically recognize that TimeTo™ is already installed on your computer, and offer to update it, without damaging your existing schedule or settings.

Troubleshooting Updating TimeTo

I am upgrading my TimeTo™, but I don't want to install to the same folder as last time, and yet the installer doesn't let me designate the destination folder (since it thinks I want to install to the same folder I originally installed to when I first installed TimeTo).

Easy answer: if you are confident that there is nothing that is of use to you in the TimeTo folder that the TimeTo installer thinks it should install to, do this. Make a backup of your active TimeTo folder, for the unlikely case that something goes terribly wrong. Then, in the Add/Remove Programs control panel (from the Start menu on your Windows desktop), highlight TimeTo, click the Remove button, and let TimeTo remove the existing installation from that folder (this will not affect any other TimeTo installation on your computer, however if you are unsure which TimeTo installation is going to get removed, read the "I Want To Know Which..." question and answer elsewhere in this help topic). Then launch the TimeTo installer again: this time the installer will let you designate the folder where you know your live TimeTo data resides. The installer will also remember for next time your preferred folder. Don't worry: the installer will not overwrite your existing schedule or settings.

Advanced answer (for users who want fuller control, fuller understanding, or know they have a special situation): Using the Run command from the Windows Start menu, put a sentence like "c:\incoming\timetosetup.exe /a" in the Run command (substitute the drive letter and directory and installer file name, depending upon where you have saved the installer you downloaded and what the installer file is called).
This will cause the installer to run in a different way than normal: instead of installing TimeTo™ it will instead ask you for the name of a Network Folder, which is a temporary folder into which it will put all of the files that the installer would normally install. When this "installation" is complete, you will find the files you need in a subfolder called "Program Files" within the temporary folder you named. You can then use Windows Explorer to copy these files into your active TimeTo folder, agreeing to replace the existing files of the same names.
The only files that you must update are: TimeTo.exe and TimeToOutlook.exe .
To get the latest Help installed as well, also copy TimeTo.chm .
To get the latest tutorial file, also copy ImportLessons.txt .
If you want the benefits of any improvements made to the master list of Time Zones, and don't mind re-customizing any changes you've made to Time Zone Settings or World Clocks/Stock Ticker settings, also copy Timezone.lst .
If you want the benefits of any improvements made to the master list of area codes, and you haven't made any manual changes to that file (there is no way to do that within TimeTo), also copy areacode.txt .
Never copy these files: worktool.lst and surprise.lst .

I want to know which TimeTo installation the TimeTo in my Add/Remove control panel is referring to.

or

I someone got more than one TimeTo in my list of programs in the Add/Remove Programs control panel. How can I figure out which is which?

You can figure this out by pretending you are going to change your TimeTo installation, but then canceling the operation... Here's how: in the Add/Remove Programs control panel (from the Start menu on your Windows desktop), highlight TimeTo, click the Change button, click Next, click Next, click Next (you should now be at the Ready To Modify The Program window). The location of the TimeTo installation appears in the middle of the window as the "Destination Folder". Now click Cancel then Yes then Finish, to cancel making any changes.

You can now go ahead and Remove the TimeTo you don't want. Any other TimeTo installations on the same computer will not be affected.

I accidentally ran the Remove command in the Add/Remove Programs control panel on my live TimeTo installation. How screwed am I?

Not very, if at all. Most, if not all, of your TimeTo data, settings and backups will still be present in the folder, so if you run the TimeTo installer and designate that same folder as the destination, TimeTo will be running fine again.

Here are the things that you may have lost, as well as the file name to restore from any backup in order to get those things back (you can restore the files either before or after running the TimeTo installer):

If you changed the Labels Settings from the default, restore status.tbl from any backup .

If you changed the Gapfillers menu from the default, restore surprise.lst from any backup .

If you changed the Tools menu from the default, restore worktool.lst from any backup.

If you changed the area codes from the default, restore areacode.txt from any backup.

If you changed the Time Zone Settings or World Clock/Stock Ticker Settings from the default, restore timezone.lst from any backup.

If you changed the chimes00.wav file from the one we ship, restore chimes00.wav from any backup.

I just installed a TimeTo™ update, and now my schedule is blank.

This can happen if you install the TimeTo™ update to a folder other than the folder your TimeTo™ was already located in. The result is that the installer changes the shortcuts for launching the program to the new blank installation, and so it appears that you have lost all your data but in fact you are just running the wrong installation of TimeTo™. If so, you can fix the situation by running the installer again, this time naming the correct destination folder: this will fix all the shortcuts too. If that solves the problem, you should still go back and delete the second installation to keep your system tidy and avoid later confusion: to do so, locate the new folder in Windows Explorer and delete that folder. If you are unsure where the new folder is, you can search your hard drive for the file timedata.pak (the main schedule file for TimeTo) and so each installation folder should contain a copy of it. Be very careful when deleting the folder to delete the correct one: to double-check, an empty timedata.pak file will have far fewer bytes than the one containing all of your data.

I want to revert to an earlier version of TimeTo™, but when I try to run the earlier installer I am told that a newer version of TimeTo already exists.

In order to revert to an earlier version of TimeTo™, you typically only need to replace the current TimeTo.exe file (and the TimeToOutlook.exe file if you synchronize TimeTo™ with Microsoft Outlook) with the earlier version of the file of the same name. If you don't happen to have a backup of the file from the version you want to revert to, here is how to extract files from any TimeTo™ installer:
Use the Run command from the Windows Start menu, putting a sentence like "c:\incoming\timetosetup.exe /a" in the Run command (substitute the drive letter and directory and installer file name, depending upon where you have saved the installer you downloaded).
This will cause the installer to run in a different way than normal: instead of installing TimeTo™ it will instead ask you for the name of a Network Folder. You can then specify whatever folder you would like for the files that the installer would normally install to be placed. When this "installation" is complete, you will find the TimeTo.exe file (and TimeToOutlook.exe) you need in a folder called "Program Files" within the temporary folder you named.
