SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE WEB SITES: HABIT #2

Web sites are uncommonly complex projects, requiring “uncommon sense”. Here is the second of seven habits to help your Web presence fulfill its promise…

2. Start with a strategic plan. No matter how much effort, money, and technology we invest in our Web site, if we haven’t agreed on what we’re trying to achieve, the likelihood of gaining valuable business results is thin.

Often, people tend to start designing a Web site before having agreed upon desired results. They may fear that by starting with strategy, the project will simply take too long. However, while it’s true that they’ll start designing later, it’s also true that they’ll reach their goals sooner.

Everyone on the project team should be able to answer the question “How will we know when we’ve succeeded?” So, the first step of every strategy is to set measurable objectives. Carefully describe the minimum desired results (not methods, but outcomes) as part of a strategic plan written in a vocabulary everyone on the project team can understand. Only then can they begin to develop an effective Web presence.

Our next e-newsletter will feature the next habit. Can’t wait? Learn all seven habits and David’s entire methodology, at our upcoming seminar …”Successful Management of Web Site Projects” ( https://davidberman.com/seminars/websuccess.php) in Ottawa January 19-20. DOWNLOAD: CULTURE FONT

For a recent project with our federal government, we designed a custom typeface that shows our pride in Canadian culture. The typeface reflects a sophisticated, modern direction based on Inuktitut type forms (honouring aboriginal culture with one of only two alphabets in use in the world today that were intentionally designed). The entire alphabet is now available in ISO-compliant format for both Windows and Macintosh computers, at no charge…
