SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE WEB SITES: HABIT #3

Web sites are uncommonly complex projects, requiring “uncommon sense”. Here is the third of seven habits to help your Web presence fulfill its promise…

3. Write an “information design plan”. We all love to start with graphic design. It’s fun. It’s familiar. We’re visual animals, and we’d rather be choosing colours than rigorously taking inventory of the site’s content.

Unfortunately, starting with how things will look often results in marching out an endless parade of sketches, only to be trounced by some higher-up asking “shouldn’t we have put a whatzit on that page?”. Therefore, before graphic design begins we should be equipped with an agreed-upon description of what’s in, what’s out, and how all the content will link together.

Most people know they need a navigation plan (a blueprint of the information architecture). I urge you to go further, writing a text description of each element that will appear on the splash page, the home page, a typical site page, as well as the persistent navigation that appears throughout the site. Reaching agreement on such a document beforehand allows the graphic design process to focus on using the power of visuals to communicate effectively.

Our next e-newsletter will feature the next habit. Can’t wait? Learn all seven habits and David’s entire methodology, at our upcoming seminar “Successful Management of Web Site Projects” ( https://davidberman.com/seminars/websuccess.php ) in Ottawa, February 18.

SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS SPEAK

“I find great value in spending time each day to plan the following day. Before I started doing this, I was overwhelmed by a very long list of top-priority items. I never felt I was making headway with my list, and was never able to complete what I had set out to do each day. This left me feeling stressed and unproductive.
Now I have a different approach: I plan the tasks that are due sooner rather than later. This makes the to-do list manageable. I consider how long each task will take so my plan for the day is realistic. The tasks that won’t fit can be deferred or dropped. Now, when I get to the end of the day, I usually have done everything I set out to do, and I feel relaxed and productive. I find TimeTo very helpful in assisting me with this approach to planning.”
– Doug Samuel, Hear ‘n See (after attending January’s “Effective Time Management for Creative Professionals” seminar)
