Certification (Accreditation) and Professional Codes of Conduct For Designers

Course Description

David Berman served as the first elected president of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario, North America’s first organization of accredited graphic designer’s, from 1997 to 1999. He drafted the association’s constitution and Rules of Professional Conduct and authored Ontario’s accreditation examination section on ethics and professional responsibility. In 1999, the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada named him a Fellow, in part for his work on certification (accreditation).

In this presentation, David shares the background and history of how the Ontario government came to be the second place in the world to certify graphic design professionals, thus tying a commitment to professional ethics to the rules of the land.

You will learn about the potential benefits to graphic designers, the public, the government, and the education system in establishing a certification for designers in your region. You will learn about how much work is involved, the steps required, and unexpected hurdles that can be anticipated. These include challenges in establishing by-laws, rules of professional conduct, standards for design education and examinations, funding, as well as potential political obstacles.

This course incorporates adult learning principles and activities appropriate to a variety of learning styles, and qualifies for CEUs (certified by organizations such as the Center For Plain Language and PPAC).
